OUR REVIEWS

Pork Belly Banh Mi on Astro Doughnut, Tofu Banh Mi on French Baguette (Affirmed)

The pork belly banh mi on a “tasteless and textureless” savory doughnut from Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken is “just eh” — “not bad” but “not great” — with “disappointing,” “bland” pork belly and a “one-dimensional” doughnut but “fresh and crunch” picked radishes and carrots” — the “highlight of the sandwich.” The tofu banh mi, however, “impressed” the Justice, with deep-fried donuts tossed in a “tasty” mushroom and tofu sauce and a baguette that “was everything I wished it to be.” For the full review, see In re PhoWheels, 24 Catt. 1 (2013).

Musubi Tacos (Affirmed)

Musubi tacos are the “opposite of fusion confusion.” The roti canai (Malaysian flatbread) was “buttery and flaky” on the outside, “fluffy and chewy” on the inside. “The filling was an explosion of sweet (from the Chinese sausage), tangy (from the pickled radishes and carrots), spicy (from the wasabi sesame seeds), and salty (from the spam and nori). It was a mix of soft and warm (rice), and cold and crunchy (pickled radishes and carrots). And the rich and creamy Kewpie mayo was the cherry on top.” For the full review, see In re PhoWheels, 28 Catt. 4 (2014).
